APPLICATION: Although motor operation from a sine wave is always preferred, some motor drive applications can achieve satisfactory performance and life expectancy by simply adding a load reactor between the drive and motor. The load reactor tames the voltage waveform to the extent that motor cable lengths of up to about 500 feet (152 meters) are possible in 480 volt applications. Acceptable motor lead lengths may vary based upon voltage, PWM switching frequency and impedance.
Type SRT – Load Reactor
Use Arteche Load Reactors (Type SRT) rated 5% impedance to protect motors from excess peak voltage due to reflected voltage waves and high dv/dt when the cable lengths are short to medium in length.
Type HRT – Precision Load Reactor
Use Arteche Load Reactors (Type HRT) rated 5% impedance to protect motors from excess peak voltage due to reflected voltage waves and high dv/dt when the cable lengths are short to medium in length, and to enable all three motor phase currents to be balanced within 0.20% for each other.
MOTOR PROTECTION: Typically, motors connected to power systems of 380V and higher are most likely to be exposed to sufficiently high reflected waves that can cause premature failure from peak overvoltage or a high dv/dt rate. The motor protection alternative technique varies depending upon voltage level, cable length and even the voltage pulse rise time (function of the IGBT transistors used in the inverter). However, for protection of submersible motors, it is necessary to use a sine wave filter.
